Why MP Caleb Amisi Believes ODM Should Have Waited Before Making Leadership Changes

The 20th anniversary of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) was meant to be a moment of celebration.

It was supposed to be a time for reflection, unity, and recognition of the party’s long journey in Kenya’s politics.

But according to MP Caleb Amisi, the timing could not have been more inappropriate.

In his view, the event and particularly the announcement of Oburu Odinga as the new party leader should have been postponed.

Amisi argues that Kenyans, especially ODM supporters, are still mourning Raila Odinga.

Raila has been more than just a political figure in the party; he has been its foundation, its voice, and its driving force for two decades.

For many, the emotional weight of his transition from active party leadership is still fresh.

Amisi believes that making major decisions at such a sensitive moment risks appearing insensitive to the feelings of loyal supporters who are still processing the change.

According to him, the situation called for patience. He feels the party should have allowed time for healing before introducing new leadership.

In his view, announcing Oburu Odinga during the anniversary celebrations made the event feel less like a tribute and more like a rushed handover.

This, he says, made the moment uncomfortable for many people who were expecting a respectful dedication to Raila’s legacy.

Amisi also notes that a transition of this magnitude requires careful planning and proper consultation.

Raila Odinga’s central role in the party means that any shift in leadership carries great significance.

He believes the party needed more time to speak with members, listen to their views, and ensure that everyone felt included in the process.

In his message, Amisi stresses that ODM is bigger than any single event or decision.

He says the party must handle such changes with sensitivity to avoid deepening divisions or creating unnecessary tension.
