“What Is the Way Forward for 2027?” Poghisio Challenge ODM Over Leadership Gaps, Unanswered Question

Former ICT Minister Samuel Poghisio has raised a concern that many Kenyans quietly share: ODM is no longer the strong, united national party it once was.

For nearly two decades, the party’s identity has been closely tied to Raila Odinga.

Yet for almost half of its existence, Raila has not been fully present in its day-to-day activities, leaving a gap that has never truly been filled.

Today, ODM finds itself in a difficult place. What was once Kenya’s most vibrant opposition movement is now struggling with internal disagreements, quiet frustrations, and a leadership structure that some members believe was imposed rather than agreed upon.

Many loyal supporters feel the party has drifted from its earlier spirit of openness and consultation.

Poghisio questions why members are pretending everything is fine when cracks are clearly visible.

According to him, insisting that ODM is still the same strong and united party is simply refusing to face the truth.

Some members are openly dissatisfied with the team that stepped in to take charge after Raila Odinga shifted his focus to continental and global responsibilities.

If these leaders were only meant to act in an interim capacity, Poghisio wonders why the party has not called for a National Delegates Conference (NDC) to allow members to choose new leaders. ODM was built on democratic foundations.

Therefore, delaying an NDC raises suspicion and fuels the feeling that a few individuals want to control the party without giving members a voice.
