Maraga Signals Potential Kalonzo Partnership, Rules Out Ruto

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has said he is ready to work with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, he made it clear that such a partnership can only happen if Kalonzo fully accepts his vision and values for the country.

Maraga spoke during an interview on Obinna TV Extra on Monday, November 24. He explained that he respects Kalonzo because they studied law together at the University of Nairobi many years ago.

According to Maraga, their long friendship makes it possible for them to cooperate politically.

He praised Kalonzo as a good and respectful leader, but he insisted that his campaign will only welcome people who are willing to support his agenda. Maraga said he will not change his principles or step aside for anyone.

Maraga stated that his political journey is guided by a strong stand on justice, the rule of law, the fight against corruption, and the need to support the youth.

He explained that these are the pillars of his campaign, and any partner must fully agree with them before joining him.

He added that as the presidential candidate, he expects other leaders to rally behind him and not the other way around.

Maraga also spoke about former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i. He said he would consider working with him only if Matiang’i first meets the “irreducible minimums” that guide his political leadership.

These include integrity, respect for the law, and a clear commitment to ending graft. Maraga noted that he is open to discussions with Matiang’i if he proves he believes in the same values.

At the same time, Maraga ruled out any possibility of working with President William Ruto. He said their values are too different, and therefore their political paths cannot meet.

According to him, he cannot team up with someone whose actions and beliefs do not align with his vision for the country.

Maraga explained that his decision to join politics was strongly influenced by the Gen Z protests of 2024.

The demonstrations were against the Finance Bill, and they pushed many young people to express their frustrations.

He said the protests were a “wake-up call” for leaders to listen to the youth and provide real opportunities.

He said the pain and anger shown by young people encouraged him to step forward and offer leadership.

Maraga believes that the youth deserve justice, employment, and respect from leaders. He added that he is committed to giving them a voice in national decision-making.
