A growing number of leaders from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have expressed their readiness to back President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election, even if their party takes a different political direction.
Among the most vocal is Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, who declared that he will stand with Ruto regardless of ODM’s stance.
Speaking in Ugunja, Siaya County, Wandayi said his decision reflects the wishes of his constituents and the political path set by the late Raila Odinga.
“Before his passing, Baba Raila Odinga urged us to continue working with the president. That is the direction Ugunja has chosen,” Wandayi said.
Wandayi, a long-time ally of Raila, praised Ruto for his role in supporting the ODM leader during the 2007 post-election crisis, saying the president proved to be a true friend of the Luo community.
He vowed to remain in Ruto’s camp until the end of his second term.
Other ODM figures who have shown willingness to align with Ruto include Oburu Oginga, who still holds a senior position within ODM, and several Luo Nyanza politicians reportedly rallying behind the idea of collaboration with the government for development purposes.
Raila’s former spokesman Dennis Onyango recently hinted that ODM has slim chances of winning the presidency in 2027 unless it forms alliances with influential figures like Ruto or former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Onyango noted that working with Ruto presents the most viable path forward, citing his established rapport with Raila before his death.
The shifting loyalties within ODM now signal a potential realignment that could redefine the country’s political landscape ahead of 2027.
