The leadership crisis within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is deepening, with senior party leaders openly challenging Oburu Oginga’s swearing-in as party leader.
The move comes just days after his installation during ODM’s 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa, sparking one of the most intense internal rebellions the party has seen since Raila Odinga’s passing.
A section of party stalwarts argues that Oburu’s elevation was rushed and unconstitutional, insisting that only the National Delegates Convention (NDC) has the authority to fill a vacancy at the top.
The National Governing Council (NGC), which ratified his appointment, is being accused of overstepping its mandate. More details of this unfolding drama can be seen here.
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has emerged as a leading critic, warning that any nomination certificates issued under Oburu’s leadership risk being legally challenged.
He further questioned why ODM’s three deputy party leaders, Abdulswamad Nassir, Simba Arati, and Godfrey Osotsi, were sidelined despite being next in line to act in the absence of a party leader.
Winnie Odinga has now joined the rebellion, calling for a full NDC to determine the party’s next leader.
She emphasized that due process must be followed to restore confidence and legitimacy within ODM, arguing that bypassing the delegates undermines the party’s democratic structures.
Despite the mounting pressure, Oburu remains defiant, insisting that internal differences will be resolved amicably.
ODM national chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has defended the NGC’s actions, explaining that the council has the authority to act when convening an NDC becomes impractical.
The rebellion signals a fresh wave of uncertainty for ODM, raising fears of a prolonged leadership dispute that could destabilize the party ahead of critical by-elections and the 2027 general elections.
Political analysts warn that the crisis could weaken ODM’s cohesion, giving rival parties a chance to exploit internal divisions.
As the drama unfolds, attention is now on whether the dissenting leaders will pursue legal action and how Oburu navigates the storm to maintain his authority.
With top figures openly contesting his leadership, ODM is facing one of its most consequential tests since the death of Raila Odinga.
