Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga left mourners in laughter during the burial of Rose Otieno, the widow of the late Otieno Kajwang’.
The funeral took place in Rose’s hometown and was attended by several ODM party leaders, including Oburu and Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo.
Rose Otieno, who was a lecturer at Kenyatta University, passed away on October 30 after battling an illness.
During her memorial service, her son David Brian Ajwang’ gave a touching speech where he revealed that he had once struggled with alcoholism after his father’s death.
He said God and his late mother helped him overcome his addiction and find a new purpose in life.
When it was his turn to speak, Senator Oburu decided to lighten the mood with a humorous confession.
He recalled how he met Millie Odhiambo years ago while working on campaigns for Raila Odinga.
He praised Millie for her dedication, energy, and organizational skills during their political work together.
“I knew Millie Gesa Gesa through Kajwang’. We were doing campaigns for Raila, and she made sure everything was in order — where people would eat, sleep, and speak. Kajwang’ and I only focused on politics. I loved Millie for that. She was so beautiful that sometimes she would confuse me,” Oburu said, making mourners laugh loudly.
His light-hearted moment stood out in an otherwise emotional event. Many Kenyans who later reacted online said they appreciated Oburu’s honesty and humor, especially during a sad occasion.
Some even described him as a “truthful leader” who knows how to comfort people through laughter.
Millie Odhiambo, known for her bold personality and outspoken nature, has not publicly responded to Oburu’s confession.
However, social media users joked about how she might take the senator’s comment.
This is not the first time Oburu has made Kenyans laugh during serious events. At his brother Raila Odinga’s state funeral earlier this year, he introduced his two wives in a playful way, explaining that he married his second wife to help his first, who was aging.
Oburu’s open personality and sense of humor continue to make him one of the most entertaining figures in Kenyan politics, showing that even during grief, laughter can bring people together.
