The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Maricus Owino, a Mathematics teacher at Lela Secondary School in Kisumu County, has ended in tragedy.
His body was discovered at a local morgue days after he went missing, leaving family and friends heartbroken.
Owino had reportedly survived a hit-and-run motorcycle accident near Kisumu Boys’ Gate, close to Aga Khan Hospital, on October 31.
According to his wife, Scholastica Achieng Odhiambo, her husband was conscious but appeared disoriented after the crash. Good Samaritans rushed him to Kisumu County Referral Hospital (KCRH) for treatment.
However, confusion unfolded upon arrival. Witnesses claim there was a heated exchange between those who brought him in and medical staff.
Lacking identification and a phone, Owino could not be properly registered. The individuals who escorted him allegedly declined to give their personal details and left after a short while.

Moments later, they informed the family that they were transferring him to another facility. Instead, they claimed to have placed him in a Kibos Route 7-11 matatu, asking the conductor to drop him at Kamakaa Stage along Kibos Road. That was the last confirmed sighting of the teacher alive.
For days, the family mounted a desperate search — visiting hospitals, police stations, and neighborhoods.
Scholastica made an emotional plea online, asking anyone with information to come forward. Her appeal gained wide attention, as many Kenyans followed the heartbreaking story with hope.
Unfortunately, hope turned to grief when the family learned that Owino’s body had been lying at a Kisumu County morgue.
How he ended up there remains unclear, and his final moments are still a mystery. His wife confirmed the sad news on Facebook, calling for justice and truth.
The family now wants a full investigation into what happened that evening, insisting that someone must explain how an injured teacher under people’s care could vanish — only to be found dead later.
As tributes pour in, colleagues and students remember Owino as a humble educator who loved his work and inspired many young minds.
May his soul rest in peace.
