Parents Confront Police Over Arrest of KCSE Candidates Planning Riots

Trans Nzoia – Parents of several students at Trans Nzoia Secondary School protested outside Kitale Police Station on Friday, November 21, demanding the release of Form Four candidates arrested the night before.

The students, all minors, were accused of planning a riot at the school.

According to the parents, the arrests took place on Thursday evening, November 20, after police received information that some students were allegedly mobilizing for unrest on the school grounds.

The parents said they were not informed of the arrests and that their children spent the night in police cells.

One parent, speaking on behalf of the group, expressed fear for her child’s safety, citing what she described as rising insecurity in the country.

Another parent noted that his asthmatic son had been left without a sweater and had spent the night in a police cell, raising health concerns.

The parents were also frustrated that the students were not given a chance to make statements, nor were they formally charged or booked.

They questioned the legal process followed, emphasizing that minors should not be held without proper notification to guardians or appropriate legal procedures.

“The children are underage. The police should have contacted us, their guardians. Detaining them without charges or communication is not right,” one parent said.

The protest coincided with the final day of the national exams, which began on October 21, 2025, and were set to conclude on November 21.

Parents expressed concern that the detention and overnight stay could negatively affect the students’ performance in the remaining papers.

The school’s Board of Management chairman accompanied the parents to the police station. He attempted to negotiate with the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) but said their concerns were dismissed.

The chairman acknowledged the situation had escalated, apologized to the parents, and promised to work on resolving the matter promptly.

“This is a critical time for the students. We must ensure they are treated fairly and can complete their exams without unnecessary stress,” he said.

The incident has drawn attention to the importance of following due process, especially when dealing with minors. Legal experts note that police are required to inform guardians when underage students are arrested and to ensure their rights are protected.

Trans Nzoia police have not yet released a detailed statement explaining the arrests. Meanwhile, parents continue to call for accountability and the safe release of their children so they can resume their exams without further interruption.
