Oburu Odinga Travels to Dubai for a Short Break as ODM Faces Internal Tensions

ODM Party Leader Oburu Odinga has taken a short break from politics after several weeks of intense activities within the party.

His sister, Ruth Odinga, confirmed on Saturday morning that the Siaya Senator had left the country for a three-day trip to Dubai.

According to her, Oburu needed time to rest and regain energy after a very busy and emotional political period.

Ruth explained that Oburu had been actively involved in major party events, including the 20th Anniversary of the ODM Party, which came at a time when the party was experiencing deep internal disagreements.

She said that the trip was important because Oburu had been working nonstop and needed a quiet moment away from the heated political discussions happening in Kenya.

In her words, “ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga has travelled to Dubai for a three-day visit to rest following a hectic political period.”

She noted that the senator was in good health and simply needed space to recharge.

An X account linked to the ODM leader also shared a short statement confirming the trip. The post said Oburu was grateful for good health and high spirits, and he felt it was the right time to take a short sabbatical.

The message added that he was taking the break to recollect, recharge, and reset before returning to active politics. The post was reposted by his son, Jaoko Oburu Odinga, who also wished him well.

Oburu’s journey comes at a delicate moment for ODM. In the past few weeks, the party has been dealing with internal wrangles, disagreements over leadership direction, and questions about the party’s political future.

Several leaders have publicly expressed different opinions about the next steps for ODM after the death of former party leader Raila Odinga.

Raila Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, a moment that deeply affected the party and the entire country.

Since Raila’s death, Oburu has taken a central leadership role, even as he continues to mourn his brother.

His trip to Dubai is the first time he has travelled outside the country since Raila’s passing.

Many political observers believe Oburu’s break is meant not only for rest but also for quiet reflection as he prepares to guide the party through a challenging period.

ODM is facing pressure to reorganize itself, address internal tensions, and redefine its political identity.

With different leaders giving conflicting messages, Oburu’s return is expected to bring clarity and direction.

Some ODM supporters see the break as a healthy decision. They argue that leaders also need time to relax, especially after emotionally demanding events such as party anniversaries, leadership meetings, and funerals.

Others believe the short trip may also give Oburu time to think about the party’s long-term future, especially with the 2027 elections approaching.
