Oburu Odinga Exposes Disloyalty Within ODM as he Accuses Some Party Insiders of Betraying Raila

Oburu Odinga, the newly ratified leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has criticised certain members within the party whom he described as disloyal to his late brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

His remarks came during the commemoration of ODM’s 20th anniversary held at the Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa on Saturday, November 15, 2025.

Speaking to a gathering of party supporters and leaders, Oburu noted that while he has remained steadfastly loyal to Raila Odinga, some individuals within the late leader’s inner circle had acted contrary to his interests.

“Ninajua kuna wenzangu, wengine ambao wanasema wako na Raila kwa dhati. Lakini kwa wakati mmoja, au ingine, walikuwa wamesaliti Raila,” Oburu stated, addressing party members in Swahili.

The statement translates to, “I know there are colleagues who claim to be with Raila sincerely. But at some point, or in some way, they betrayed Raila.”

Observers say Oburu’s comments underline the challenges ODM faces as it navigates a leadership transition following Raila Odinga’s passing.

By calling out perceived disloyalty, Oburu is asserting his authority while warning party members against actions that could undermine unity and the late leader’s legacy.

The anniversary event, which drew leaders and supporters from across the country, provided a platform for Oburu to articulate his vision for ODM’s future.

He pledged to uphold Raila Odinga’s initiatives and maintain the party’s commitments, including its engagement with the broad-based government.

As ODM moves forward under Oburu’s leadership, the party faces the dual challenge of preserving the late leader’s legacy while preparing for the political contests ahead, including the 2027 elections.

The anniversary celebrations in Mombasa marked both a moment of reflection and a clear assertion of new leadership at the helm of one of Kenya’s most influential political parties.
