"Ni Kama Harambee Stars" George Natembeya Shares Name of United Opposition Coalition

Kisii – Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has officially announced the name of the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He compared it to the national football team, Harambee Stars, saying it will work like a well-coordinated team with strikers, midfielders, wingers, and defenders, each playing their role to achieve victory.

According to Natembeya, the coalition’s main goal is to ensure that President William Ruto serves only one term.

“We are forming a team called Kenya One. Just like in football, everyone has a role. We must work together to achieve our goal,” he said.

The coalition brings together many political leaders and parties. It is led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and includes Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, People Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua, DAP-Kenya boss Eugene Wamalwa, and former Jubilee Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

Other prominent members are former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, Deputy President leader Justin Muturi, and Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni.

Natembeya made the announcement while supporting opposition MCA candidate Jeremiah Ongaro. He said the coalition’s formation is about unity and teamwork, with all leaders focusing on the bigger picture rather than personal ambitions.

While Kenya One has attracted nationwide support, it has also faced challenges. Some leaders have expressed concerns that certain colleagues may be working with the government to divide votes or leak information.

Despite this, Natembeya emphasized that the coalition remains committed to its mission and is focused on winning the 2027 elections.

The coalition has also set plans to select a single presidential candidate. Gachagua has said that a vetting process will determine who will run for president, and the chosen candidate will be announced in December 2026, just months before the general election.

A leaked document – which Gachagua called false – suggested that Kalonzo Musyoka would be the presidential candidate, with Natembeya as deputy.

It also claimed that Fred Matiang’i would serve as prime minister, a position not provided for in the current Constitution.

The same document alleged that Gachagua would get half of all government appointments if Kalonzo won, while Karua and Wamalwa would serve as Senate and National Assembly speakers.

Political analysts say that the naming of Kenya One is a strategic move. By comparing the coalition to a football team, Natembeya is sending a message that unity and teamwork are essential for success.

The analogy also makes the coalition’s message relatable, especially to young voters who understand sports dynamics.
