Laughter at Raila’s Home as James Orengo Runs Around with Walking Stick Gift

There was laughter and cheer at Raila Odinga’s Opoda Farm home in Bondo after Siaya Governor James Orengo brought comic relief during a visit to pay tribute to the late opposition leader.

Orengo was among the politicians who accompanied Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to condole with the Odinga family. Kalonzo, who arrived with members of the Wiper Democratic Movement, the Kamba Council of Elders, and religious leaders, presented Ida Odinga with 100 cattle. The gesture was meant to symbolise unity and long-standing friendship between the Kamba and Luo communities.

However, the highlight of the visit came when one of the Kamba elders handed Orengo a traditional walking stick as a sign of honour and respect. Before presenting the gift, Kalonzo described Orengo as a fearless and progressive leader.

The elder reminisced about Orengo’s youthful activism, saying, “I knew you when you were in school; you fought for fellow students, and you continue to fight for Kenya.”

Immediately after receiving the walking stick, Orengo broke into a playful run around the compound while shouting “Jowi!”, a traditional Luo battle cry. His antics sent the crowd into fits of laughter, with Kalonzo and Ida Odinga visibly amused by the governor’s energetic display.

The lighthearted moment provided a welcome break from the somber mood surrounding the memorial events for Raila Odinga. Many Kenyans online later praised Orengo’s sense of humour, noting how his act had lifted spirits at the gathering.

One user commented, “Orengo is a good man,” while another added, “They made Mama Ida smile today.” The brief spectacle at Opoda Farm reminded many of the deep bonds of friendship and respect that have long united Kenya’s political leaders and communities.
