Prof. Fred Ogola has raised sharp concerns after Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni appeared to threaten Kenya while making claims about the Indian Ocean.
According to Ogola, Museveni’s remarks were not only shocking but also deeply disrespectful to Kenya’s sovereignty.
He argues that such statements should never be taken lightly, especially when they touch on territorial integrity.
Ogola questions how Museveni could boldly suggest that the Indian Ocean belongs to him, calling the idea both “backward and unacceptable.”
He says the Indian Ocean has always been part of Kenya, just as Lake Victoria has always been shared fairly among East African nations.
For him, these natural boundaries are not random they are part of history, geography, and the will of God. Attempting to rewrite them, he says, is both unrealistic and dangerous.
What has angered Ogola even more is the silence from President William Ruto. He says a strong response from the Kenyan leader was necessary, especially because Museveni’s comments sounded like a direct provocation.
To Ogola, threatening Kenya is no small matter. He insists that the President should have stood firm and firmly defended the country’s borders, dignity, and people.
Ogola believes East Africa should be promoting modern, progressive thinking ideas that push the region forward economically and socially.
Instead, he fears Museveni’s comments take the region backwards, to a time when leaders used threats rather than diplomacy.
He warns that if such rhetoric goes unchallenged, it may set a dangerous tone for the future of regional relations.
Despite the tension, Ogola emphasizes that Kenyans are peaceful people who value unity within the East African Community.
