CS Wandayi Addresses Plans to Vie for President Under ODM in 2027

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has shared his views on the future of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and his personal political plans.

Speaking during an interview on Ramogi TV, he said that ODM is facing many internal tensions that could weaken the party if leaders do not act wisely. He also made it clear that he will not be a presidential candidate in 2027.

Wandayi explained that ODM has tried for many years to win the presidency, but the party has not succeeded.

He said this history should push members to reflect and make better decisions, instead of fighting or making statements that divide supporters.

According to him, the party needs serious guidance if it hopes to remain relevant.

He said he has no interest in running against President William Ruto in the next election.

Instead, he wants to focus on serving Kenyans in his current position as Cabinet Secretary for Energy. He stated that leadership is not about personal gain but about responsibility.

Wandayi added that he is committed to working with President Ruto beyond 2027 because he believes unity and cooperation can help the country move forward.

He noted that some people criticise him for working with the government, but he believes his service benefits the whole nation, not a few individuals.

He also used the interview to send a warning to ODM politicians who make emotional or populist remarks.

He said leaders should not speak only to gain attention. Instead, they should offer real solutions that can help Kenyans judge their ideas fairly.

According to him, freedom of speech is important, but responsible speech is even more important.

Wandayi pointed out that 2027 will feature only two major political camps: President Ruto’s team and the group surrounding former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

He said Gachagua’s team has already planned its direction, and it may be difficult for ODM to fit into that space.

Because of this, he believes ODM needs to reflect deeply on whether it should front its own presidential candidate or continue working with Ruto.

He said leaders must ask honest questions: Does ODM have a strong candidate who can win the presidency? Is it wiser for the party to join a coalition with Ruto? He warned that if ODM fails to answer these questions clearly, internal conflicts will continue.

Wandayi also reminded the public that political positions are temporary. He said today he is a Cabinet Secretary, but tomorrow he could return to normal life. What matters most, he said, is doing the job well and helping the country grow.
