Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed why he failed to attend the late Raila Odinga’s funeral ceremonies at Nyayo Stadium and Opoda Farm, despite earlier indications that he would be present.
Gachagua said he had prepared to join other leaders at Nyayo Stadium for the state funeral, but intelligence reaching him warned of a planned attempt on his life.
He linked the alleged plot to earlier incidents in Mwiki and Limuru, events he believes were never investigated or resolved.
The reports suggested that the attack would be staged during the ceremony, creating confusion and political tension in the aftermath.
He added that he had also intended to travel to Bondo, but fresh information again pointed to a second attempt on his life.
This time, the alleged plan involved senior government officials and was aimed at using the chaos to trigger hostility between the Luo and Kikuyu communities.
Gachagua maintained that his absence from both Nyayo Stadium and Opoda Farm was based solely on security concerns. He stressed that it had nothing to do with disrespect toward Raila Odinga or his family.
He said he has already spoken to Winnie Odinga to explain his decision and express his respect during their time of mourning.
He announced that he will visit Bondo after the by-elections, accompanied by Kikuyu elders. The visit is meant to promote unity and help close the historical gap between Luos and Kikuyus.
His plan focuses on reconciliation, dialogue, and rebuilding trust between the two communities.
