Politicians' Handwritings in Raila's Condolences Book leaves Kenyans Talking

The nation continues to mourn the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga, who passed away in India after suffering a heart attack during his morning walk. His remains were flown back to Kenya and laid to rest within days, honoring his final wish for a swift burial.

On Tuesday, October 21, emotional scenes unfolded at State House as Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba joined other dignitaries in signing the national condolence book. What began as a solemn moment quickly ignited an online storm after photos of their handwritten messages surfaced on social media.

DP Kindiki’s note read, “It was an honour to know and interact with the Rt Honourable former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. He was a good friend to my brother, Professor Isiah Kindiki. May our former Prime Minister’s soul rest in eternity. Rest in peace, Mzee.”

However, it was CS Ogamba’s tribute that grabbed unexpected attention. His message penned in a distinct, looping cursive, stated, “This is a big loss to the family, country, and the globe at large.

Raila Amollo Odinga was a wonderful statesman who contributed significantly to the demise of democracy in our country. We pray for his family. May his soul rest peacefully.”

Social media users quickly flooded X and Facebook with reactions, praising Ogamba’s penmanship while debating his curious wording. One user, @CarolMumKim, wrote, “Good handwriting Mr. Professor, and may Raila’s soul rest in eternal peace.” Another, Da Priest, noted, “Nice words, but let’s honor Raila by living his dream for justice and equality.”

Meanwhile, proposals to name Talanta Stadium or a major Nairobi avenue after Raila gained traction online, as Kenyans continue reflecting on the legacy of a man many called “Baba,” the father of modern democracy.
