Oburu Odinga Suggests Luo Leader Who Should Take The Mantle From His Late Brother Raila Odinga

Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has said that the next political kingpin of Nyanza will not come from Raila Odinga’s generation, but from a new team of young, energetic leaders who were mentored by the late ODM leader.

In his first interview after Raila’s death, Oburu explained that the people of Nyanza should not rush to name a new regional leader.

According to him, Raila’s generation already played its part, and it is now time for younger leaders to take the mantle and lead with fresh ideas.

“Those of us who walked with Raila have done our bit. We should now step aside and allow the young men and women he mentored to move the region forward,” Oburu said.

He noted that Raila had invested years in building and guiding a new generation of leaders who now have both the energy and the knowledge to lead effectively.

Oburu added that what the youth need most is confidence and support from the public to fill the gap left by Raila’s passing.
The Siaya senator further urged young politicians to take advantage of the coming 2027 elections to rise and make their mark.

He encouraged them to join existing political parties, learn from senior leaders, and later shape their own political paths.

“The young people should step up and get involved in political structures,” he advised.

“They have the time, the strength, and the passion to serve. Leadership is not a gift—it is earned through participation.”

Oburu also said that the region must remain united even after Raila’s death. He warned against division and unnecessary competition among those eyeing the top seat in Nyanza, saying that unity would help maintain the political strength that Raila built over decades.

Raila Odinga passed away in India on October 15, where he was receiving treatment. His death left a leadership vacuum both in ODM and in national politics.

Before his death, Raila had guided ODM to work with President William Ruto’s government but did not make it clear whether the party would support Ruto in the 2027 elections.
Oburu’s message signals the start of a new political chapter in Nyanza—one that calls for fresh leadership, youthful energy, and continued loyalty to Raila’s legacy.
