Stephen Letoo has shared new details about the events that followed the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
According to him, he was part of the delegation that traveled to India to bring back Raila’s body.
The team, led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, arrived in Mumbai where the process was handled under tight security by the Indian military.
Letoo explained that the delegation was not allowed to open or view the coffin because it had already been sealed for transport.
Everything at the Mumbai airport was conducted swiftly. After a brief prayer session, the coffin was carefully placed onto a Kenya Airways flight, and the group began their return journey to Nairobi.
He revealed that the main reason they could not see the body in India was that it had not yet been prepared for public viewing.
The plan was to complete the embalming process once the remains reached Nairobi. Raila’s body was then expected to be taken to Lee Funeral Home for preservation and dressing before the public viewing.
However, sources later indicated that the final preparations, including embalming, changing of the attire, and replacing the coffin, were carried out by Kenya Defence Forces morticians at the VIP section of Kasarani Stadium.
This was done shortly before the body was presented for public viewing, where thousands of mourners had gathered to pay their last respects.
The account shared by Letoo provides a closer look at the delicate and highly coordinated operation that took place between Indian and Kenyan authorities to ensure the safe return of Raila’s remains.
It also highlights the level of respect and security accorded to the former prime minister during the entire process.
