Hilda Akinyi, a resident of Migori, says her life changed completely this year after losing her eldest daughter and teenage son in quick succession. The two had similar symptoms that left the family confused and heartbroken.
According to Hilda, her 30-year-old daughter Joyce was the first to fall ill. She suddenly started complaining about pain in her leg that became swollen with time.
Concerned, the family took her to hospital several times, but doctors were unable to find the cause of the problem. Despite taking painkillers and other medicine, her condition worsened, and she passed away in May.
“Joyce was strong and cheerful. Seeing her suffer and not knowing what to do broke me completely,” Hilda said in tears.
Barely five months later, her son Emmanuel started complaining of a similar pain. At first, the family thought it was a minor issue, but when it persisted, they decided to seek medical help immediately.
Emmanuel, who was studying at Bunyore Teachers Training College, was taken for a scan which revealed a tumour near his knee. Doctors later confirmed it was cancer.
Hilda says they tried every possible treatment to save his life, but the pain kept increasing until he finally passed away on October 29.
“I am lost for words. Losing two children to similar illnesses in such a short time has left me broken. I wish it were me instead,” she said.
The grieving mother is now left with three children and struggling to raise funds for Emmanuel’s burial. She appealed to well-wishers to help her give her son a decent send-off.
“I have faith that God will send kind people our way. I only want my boy to rest in peace,” she added.
