Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has spoken about Citizen TV journalist Yvonne Okwara after she asked very hard questions to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Salasya said Yvonne Okwara is a very brave lady and she does not fear asking tough questions even when the person she is interviewing is a very powerful leader.
He said that when she was telling Gachagua to bring evidence on paper for the claims he was making, she was only doing her work as a journalist.
According to him, that is the real job of the media, to ask for proof and facts, and not just to listen and believe what politicians are saying without showing anything.
Salasya laughed and said people should not think Yvonne Okwara is disrespectful. He explained that journalists take many risks when they do their work, but they do not fear because they want Kenyans to know the truth.
He said a journalist is the voice of ordinary Kenyans, and they ask questions that many citizens would want to ask but cannot because they do not have the chance to sit face to face with leaders.
The MP also joked about how Gachagua reacted when Yvonne Okwara kept pressing him for evidence.
He said Gachagua likes to talk big things but he has never shown the papers or proof to back his words.
That is why, according to Salasya, journalists must continue asking “maswali ngumu ngumu” (difficult questions) without fear.
Salasya also said leaders should not see journalists as enemies. Instead, they should see them as people who help to show the truth. He said politicians must learn to accept hard interviews instead of running away or becoming angry when pressed.
The MP admitted that he was watching a football match between Morocco and Senegal when the interview was going on, but later he tried to catch up with what happened. He said he was very happy with how Yvonne Okwara handled herself.
Salasya praised all journalists in Kenya, saying they risk a lot but they continue to be strong.
He said Okwara’s courage is something that many should copy, because only fearless journalism can bring out the truth about corruption, politics, and leadership.
