Gachagua’s Political Wars Backfire, Weakening Opposition Ahead of 2027; Details

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is increasingly finding himself at the centre of a simmering storm that threatens to split the already fragile opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Regarded as a unifying voice for the vote-rich Mt Kenya bloc, Gachagua’s growing list of political wars has cast him as a polarising figure, whose fights risk undermining the opposition’s bid to challenge President William Ruto.

His combative political style, both within and without, are raising serious concerns about the opposition’s ability to mount a credible challenge against President William Ruto.

Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni and PNU Leaders Peter Munya recently accused Gachagua of diminishing those backing Fred Matiang'i' presidential bid.

The supremacy fight between Matiang'i' and Gachagua has left opposition exposed even as they vow to remain united under the 'Wantam' movement.

Gachagua recently told Matiang'i' to stop holding meetings in hotels and boardroom and instead join them in rallies at the grassroots.

Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna last week got back at Gachagua after the latter linked the Kenya Moja faction with President Ruto.

Sifuna leads the Kenya Moja faction, which has presented itself as the third force to challenge mainstream politics.

The senator called Gachagua out for appearing to reserve the right to challenge Ruto, yet many other Kenyans have been on that mission long before he was kicked out of the current regime.

Kenya Moja Alliance members include MPs Caleb Amisi (Saboti), Babu Owino (Embakasi East), Gathoni Wamuchomba (Githunguri), Jack Wamboka (Bumula) and Anthony Kibagendi (Kitutu Chache South).
