Tensions have emerged within the United Opposition as leaders allied to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i threatened to withdraw from the coalition.
According to Taifa Leo, the group accused one of the coalition’s principals of disrespect and arrogance, saying the behaviour was undermining unity and trust within the alliance.
The leaders warned that they would not tolerate being sidelined or demeaned in political decisions.
Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, Zach Kinuthia, and Jubilee Party’s Jeremiah Kioni voiced their frustrations, saying the coalition must come up with a fair and transparent method of selecting its 2027 presidential flagbearer.
They said the choice should be based on leadership record and service to the public.
Kioni stressed that every aspirant must account for their past performance before being considered for the top seat.
“Those who want to be president must show what they achieved while in office,” he said during a joint briefing with Munya and Kinuthia.
The leaders further noted that the coalition risks collapsing if internal wrangles are not resolved early. They urged the top leadership to respect all members and avoid creating divisions that could weaken the opposition’s chances in the next election.
In recent weeks, tension between Matiang’i’s Democracy for Citizens Party–Kenya (DCP–K) and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s camp has been rising, with both sides exchanging mild political jabs in public forums.
The latest fallout now exposes widening cracks in the opposition alliance as it seeks to build a strong front ahead of the 2027 polls.
