Lawyer and political activist Miguna Miguna has stirred public debate after questioning the lack of acknowledgment for Francis, the longtime personal bodyguard of the late Raila Amolo Odinga, during the week-long national mourning period.
In a statement shared across his social media platforms, Miguna revealed that Francis had served Raila with unwavering loyalty for over 30 years, standing by him through countless political struggles and personal moments.
Miguna expressed surprise that despite the bodyguard’s decades of dedication, no mention of him was made by Raila’s family, political allies, or even government officials throughout the mourning events.
“Raila Odinga had a personal bodyguard for over 30 years called Francis. Francis remained with Raila till his death. Why is it that no one mentioned his name throughout the 7-day mourning?” Miguna wrote.
His post quickly went viral, triggering mixed reactions among Kenyans online. Some users agreed with Miguna, arguing that loyal aides like Francis often go unrecognized once their principals pass away, despite their years of silent service. Others, however, viewed Miguna’s remarks as ill-timed and unnecessarily provocative given the nation’s emotional state.
Little is publicly known about Francis, who was a constant yet quiet presence beside Raila at rallies, campaign trails, and private family gatherings, but rarely interacted with the press. Analysts suggest Miguna’s comments highlight a larger societal issue — the tendency to overlook the unsung heroes who faithfully serve powerful leaders away from the spotlight.
As tributes to Raila continue to flood in, Miguna’s observation has reignited discussions on whether Kenya adequately honors the behind-the-scenes figures — such as drivers, security aides, and secretaries — whose devotion often goes unnoticed but remains integral to the nation’s political and historical legacy.
