Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued an urgent public warning to police officers formerly attached to the specialized Nairobi "Sierra" unit, urging them to break their silence immediately.
Speaking on Sunday, August 9, 2026, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader alleged that members of the now-dismantled unit face severe personal danger because of the sensitive state secrets they possess.
Gachagua disclosed that following the secret disbandment of the unit, its officers were quietly redeployed to remote stations across the country.
He claimed this administrative transfer was designed to scatter key witnesses and prevent cohesive testimony regarding past covert operations.
"I am speaking directly to those officers who served in the Sierra unit: come forward now and disclose everything you know," Gachagua urged during a press address.
He argued that going public with full disclosures remains their safest protection against potential harm or efforts to silence them.
The DCP leader alleged that the specialized squad was previously utilized to carry out controversial operations, illegal surveillance, and high-handed crackdowns against political opponents.
He insisted that the sudden disbandment of the unit was an attempt by senior figures to erase operational footprints.
Gachagua called upon the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), human rights defenders, and the Judiciary to provide immediate protection for any officer willing to turn whistleblower.
He stressed that protecting these officers is essential for uncovering the truth behind several unresolved high-profile incidents and extrajudicial activities.
The explosive claims come amid a broader ongoing feud between Gachagua and top security chiefs, including Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
