Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has warned opposition leaders against forming a loose political coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election, saying Kenyans need a credible alternative with a clear plan for governing the country.
Matiang'i, who is also Jubilee Party's deputy leader, said the opposition should not unite simply because its members want to defeat President William Ruto and Kenya Kwanza.
He described such an arrangement as a "matatu opposition coalition," where politicians share a vehicle but have no common purpose beyond reaching the same destination.
According to Matiang'i, previous political alliances, including NARC and Jubilee, demonstrated the dangers of coalitions built without a strong shared agenda. He urged opposition parties to first present their individual plans for transforming Kenya before identifying areas where they can work together.
Matiang'i also criticised the personalisation of Kenya's presidency, arguing that the focus should shift from individuals to institutions. He called for stronger constitutional governance and a presidency exercised through established state institutions rather than personal authority.
