The United States has taken one of its strongest steps yet toward ending the war in Sudan after President Donald Trump announced a new plan to push for peace.
Later, Trump repeated the message on social media. He described Sudan as “one of the most violent places on earth” and said the crisis had turned into the world’s largest humanitarian disaster.
According to the report that inspired this story, the idea of stronger U.S. involvement came after Trump held a lengthy meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during the U.S.–Saudi Investment Forum in Washington.
Trump told the gathering that he had not planned to intervene in Sudan’s conflict at first. However, he said the Crown Prince convinced him that the region was ready to help and that the people of Sudan could not afford more years of suffering. This conversation pushed him to take action.
During the forum, Trump revealed that a new U.S.–backed peace proposal had already reached one of the main groups in the war. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a powerful paramilitary group fighting the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), signaled that it was willing to consider a truce.
