Former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has strongly criticized the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) after a disturbing video emerged showing a group of men threatening former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua ahead of his planned visit to Mbeere North, Embu County.
The viral video, which has been widely shared on social media, shows four individuals vowing to block Gachagua’s campaign tour scheduled for November 16.
These remarks have sparked anger and concern across political circles, with many Kenyans questioning whether the electoral environment is becoming unsafe ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Reacting to the video, Moses Kuria took to his social media pages to condemn the threats and blame the IEBC for ignoring early warnings about growing political intolerance in the region.
“Dear IEBC, is this how 2027 will look like?” Kuria asked.

In the clip, the men openly use threatening language, suggesting that Gachagua would not be welcomed in the area and should prepare for hostility.
One of the men could be heard saying, “We don’t have any other work from today until Rigathi Gachagua arrives in Mbeere North. Let him come and prove he is a man. We will show him what Mbeere men are made of.”

Another man went further, warning Gachagua not to bring along his wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, to his political rallies, saying, “Come alone if you are brave. Leave Pastor Dorcas behind because we respect women.”

“I have raised this matter several times with your Electoral Operations Commissioner but no action has been taken. Elections are not an event; they are a process. Mbeere North is your territory right now, not the state’s. The buck stops with you. Your main duty is to protect public confidence.”
Kuria warned that if such threats go unchecked, they could undermine Kenya’s democracy and spark unnecessary tension during elections. He urged the electoral body to act immediately and assure Kenyans that all political parties will be treated fairly.
Rigathi Gachagua, who now leads the Democratic Party (DP) after falling out with President William Ruto, is expected in Mbeere North on November 16 to drum up support for his party’s candidate in the upcoming by-election.
The seat became vacant after President Ruto appointed former MP Geoffrey Ruku as Cabinet Secretary for Public Service.

The by-election is expected to attract intense competition, with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), DP, and other opposition-affiliated parties all keen to prove their strength in the Mount Kenya East region.
Sources close to Gachagua say his team is taking the threats seriously, though they insist the visit will go on as planned. Local police have also been alerted and are expected to provide security during the tour.
Mbeere North has lately become a hot political battleground, especially since Gachagua’s Democratic Party announced it would support the Democratic Party associated with former Attorney General and ex-Public Service CS Justin Muturi.
In a show of unity, Gachagua’s new political group, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), had earlier agreed not to field a candidate in the by-election.

Instead, they pledged to support the DP candidate to strengthen opposition unity against President Ruto’s UDA.

Ruku has insisted that the government has no role in IEBC’s operations and that the elections will be free and fair.
The emergence of the threatening video has reignited debate about the neutrality and preparedness of IEBC to handle future elections.

Political analysts warn that such incidents, if ignored, could fuel fear and discourage candidates from certain regions or parties from campaigning freely.
Kuria’s sharp criticism reflects a growing frustration among opposition leaders who claim state agencies are favouring government candidates.

He maintained that IEBC must act firmly and transparently to prevent violence or intimidation ahead of the polls.
“Kenya’s democracy is built on trust,” Kuria emphasized. “Once the people lose confidence in the electoral process, everything else collapses.”
As campaigns intensify in Mbeere North, both government and opposition figures have called for calm and maturity.
