Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has come to the aid of a Mombasa woman who was assaulted by her boyfriend, a well-known boxer in the region.
This comes just days after Sonko’s own daughter, Salma, was attacked by her partner, prompting him to intensify his fight against Gender-Based Violence.
Sonko said he received a distress call on Tuesday, November 18, from a woman reporting that her sister, Zuhura, had been beaten and thrown out of her house.
According to Zuhura, the confrontation began when her boyfriend stormed into the house at around 10pm demanding a KSh 16,000 loan he had given her in 2022.
She told him she would repay the money the following day and even offered some of her household items if she failed to raise the full amount.
The man ignored her explanation and allegedly attacked her before ejecting her from the house they shared.
She later made a report at Bamburi Police Station, where officers confirmed she arrived shaken and partially dressed after being forced out.
Zuhura’s sister said this was the third time they were recording an OB against the man.
She claimed the boyfriend becomes violent when drunk and has been depending on Zuhura financially despite trying to stop her from working.
Sonko urged her to seek medical attention and fill out a P3 form to support police investigations.
He also offered to pay for her treatment and immediately settled the KSh 16,000 she owed.
“I’ve sent the money. Make sure you fill out the P3 form so the police can take action,” Sonko said.
He then requested officers to escort her back to the house to collect her belongings safely. The suspect, who attempted to flee with some items, was traced and arrested.
Sonko has vowed to continue supporting victims of domestic violence as more cases come to his attention.
