Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has disclosed a historic and little-known encounter between his family and Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, recounting how his late father, former Cabinet Minister Zachary Onyonka, secretly sheltered Museveni in Kenya decades before he rose to power.

Speaking in a past interview, Senator Onyonka reflected on the dramatic events of 1978, when a young Museveni—then a fugitive escaping the rule of Uganda’s President Milton Obote—found refuge in their family home in Kisii.
