Nairobi – Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has dismissed recent claims that Kenyan police officers are abducting citizens, emphasizing that such acts are unconstitutional and not part of their duties.
Speaking on Friday evening during an interview on NTV, Kanja said the National Police Service (NPS) strictly follows the law and is committed to upholding it.
“We do not have police officers abducting Kenyans. Our service understands its duties clearly, and abduction is not among them,” Kanja said.

He added that any officer found engaging in illegal activities, including abductions, would face immediate and appropriate disciplinary action.
The IG’s remarks come amid reports of a rise in abductions in the country, particularly targeting government critics and human rights activists.

Kanja stressed that police work is clearly defined under the Constitution, and any officer violating the law will be held accountable.
“If anyone goes in that direction, believe me, we will take the necessary action according to the law,” he said.
During the interview, Kanja also addressed public concerns surrounding Collins Jumaisi, a suspect in the Mukuru kwa Njenga serial killings.

Jumaisi reportedly escaped from police custody under unclear circumstances. Authorities had previously arrested him in connection with the murder of 42 women whose mutilated bodies were discovered in a quarry.
According to Kanja, police have already taken disciplinary action against officers suspected of enabling Jumaisi’s escape. He confirmed that a fresh manhunt has been launched to locate Jumaisi and bring him to justice.
“We know what happened in our station, and those responsible for allowing Jumaisi to escape have faced consequences. We are determined to find him, and he must answer for his crimes,” Kanja stated.
The IG also reassured the public that the NPS remains committed to transparency and accountability in all its operations. He encouraged citizens to report any misconduct by police officers so that appropriate steps could be taken swiftly.
Kanja’s statements come at a time when police accountability and public trust have become central issues, especially during politically sensitive periods like campaigns and by-elections. His firm stance aims to reassure Kenyans that law enforcement will operate within the legal framework and maintain public safety.
The Jumaisi case, in particular, has drawn significant attention due to the scale of the crimes and the alleged lapses in police custody. Authorities have promised that the manhunt will be thorough and that anyone assisting Jumaisi will face legal consequences.
