"If You Knew Anything, It Was Either Winnie or Junet" Makali Mulu on Baba’s Inner Circle

MP Makali Mulu has shared his observations about how the late President Mwai Kibaki, fondly known as Baba, handled important agreements during his lifetime.

According to Mulu, Baba rarely signed key deals alone. He would always be accompanied by people he trusted deeply, particularly Winnie and Junet.

This, Mulu notes, was not a matter of formality. The presence of Winnie or Junet was a sign that Baba valued their judgment and advice.

They were part of a small inner circle whose opinions carried weight when critical decisions were being made.

“When he was about to sign these agreements, he made sure someone with insight was present,” Mulu explained.

“That person was usually Winnie or Junet.”

Mulu also highlighted the broader implication of this practice. It shows that Baba understood the importance of guidance and second opinions, especially on matters that affected the country.

By involving trusted allies, he ensured that decisions were not made in isolation but were carefully considered. This approach, Mulu says, is a lesson in leadership and consultation.

Furthermore, Mulu reflected on Winnie’s role. Her words, he observed, suggested that the responsibility of understanding and guiding key agreements might fall to either her or Junet. This indicates a level of confidence that Baba placed in both of them.

“It was about having someone who could provide insight,” Mulu noted.

“That was the key to making informed decisions.”

For Mulu, these memories are more than historical observations; they are reminders of the values of trust, careful deliberation, and seeking counsel from those you rely on.
