Tanzania’s opposition party, CHADEMA, has accused the government of trying to hide the truth about deaths that happened during protests after the recent election.
The party said police officers have been moving around to different hospitals, collecting the bodies of people who were killed during the demonstrations.
They believe this is being done to reduce the official number of deaths and to destroy any proof of what really happened.
According to CHADEMA’s Secretary General, John Mnyika, the situation in the country has become very serious.
He said the police used too much force against peaceful protesters who were showing their anger over the disputed election results.
The opposition is now calling for help from the international community.
Mnyika asked organizations like the United Nations and the International Criminal Court to look into what happened and take steps against those responsible for the killings.
CHADEMA also said that some hospitals are struggling because many bodies have been brought in, and many injured people cannot reach medical help due to a lack of transport and the ongoing internet shutdown.
The party is demanding that the government restore internet services so that people can communicate and share information freely.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan was declared the winner of the October 29 election with more than 97 percent of the votes.
However, the opposition rejected the outcome, saying the vote was not fair and that the results were made up to favor the ruling party.
Since then, there have been growing concerns from outside Tanzania.
Several global leaders, including those from the United Nations and the European Union, have called on the government to allow an independent investigation into the alleged killings and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
