Gachagua Challenged to Mend Tensions Ahead of Raila's Home Tour, Warned What Will Happen If He Fails

A man from Bondo has urged former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to use his upcoming visit to Opoda farm to ease long-standing tensions between the Kikuyu and Luo communities.

In an open letter, the Bondo resident said Gachagua’s trip could be a chance to rebuild relations that have often been strained by politics.

The man described the visit as more than just a courtesy—it could be a symbol of peace and reconciliation.

Gachagua confirmed last week that he plans to visit the gravesite of the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga in early December.

He had stayed quiet about the visit for weeks but said discussions with Raila’s daughter, Winnie Odinga, cleared the way for him to go, despite some ODM leaders advising against it.

The letter reminded Gachagua of his past statements during the 2023 protests, when he had said he would "personally send Raila back to Bondo."

The writer pointed out that now Raila is permanently in Bondo, and Gachagua’s planned visit is a gracious gesture that could show maturity and leadership.

The Bondo native urged Gachagua to focus on reconciliation rather than showmanship.

He joked, “Forget about running with cows and shouting Jowi. Please spare Pastor Dorcas the ritual of running with the spear.”

He also reminded Gachagua that his actions would influence Kenya’s younger generations.

“This feud between two of the largest communities in Kenya can hurt the country. But you, as a former Deputy President, have the power to set an example that lasts for years,” the letter read.

Earlier this month, Gachagua praised Raila Odinga as a political master, acknowledging his skill in winning even when the odds were against him.

He also mentioned that he tried to attend Raila’s State funeral at Kasarani Stadium in October but stayed away for safety reasons.

The letter concludes by urging Gachagua to use his influence to bring people together and create a legacy of unity, rather than division.
