Catholics Mourn Veteran Kakamega Bishop Philip Sulumeti

The Catholic Church in Kenya is mourning the death of Bishop Emeritus Philip Sulumeti, who passed away while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital.

The sad news was confirmed by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) on Monday morning.

In a statement, the bishops described Bishop Sulumeti as a humble and dedicated servant of God who faithfully served the people of Kakamega and beyond.

“We join the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega and the entire Church in Kenya in mourning the passing on of Bishop Emeritus Rt. Rev. Philip Sulumeti, who went to be with the Lord last night,” KCCB said.

They added that his life was a true reflection of commitment to the gospel and love for humanity.
Bishop Joseph Obanyi of Kakamega Diocese also confirmed the sad news, saying the late bishop died on Sunday night around 11 p.m. He asked all believers to keep him in their prayers as burial arrangements are made.

“I request you to keep him in your prayers, remembering him in the masses, as we begin making arrangements for his burial,” Bishop Obanyi said.

Bishop Sulumeti, who was in his late 80s, was one of the longest-serving Catholic leaders in Western Kenya.

He served the church for nearly 50 years and played a big role in growing faith among the people.

He first served as Bishop of Kisumu before being appointed as the first Bishop of Kakamega Diocese on February 28, 1978.

His leadership helped to expand the church’s work in education, health, and community development across the region.

Many faithful in Kakamega and other parts of Kenya have described him as a father figure, a teacher, and a man of peace.

“He taught us to live in unity and to serve others with love,” said one church member in Kakamega.

The Catholic community is expected to hold special prayers and memorial services to celebrate his life and legacy. Details about his burial will be shared later by the Diocese of Kakamega.

At the time of his death, Bishop Sulumeti left behind a strong legacy of faith, humility, and service that continues to inspire many Catholics across Kenya.
