A well-known Catholic priest in Tanzania has been found in critical condition after being abducted by unknown people, allegedly for speaking out against the government.
The shocking incident has caused anger and fear among Tanzanians and raised concerns about the growing pressure on freedom of speech under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration.
According to reports from local media and church officials, the priest was taken by unidentified men on Sunday evening near his parish.
Witnesses say the men arrived in an unmarked vehicle, grabbed the priest, and drove away quickly before anyone could intervene.
Efforts by residents and church members to reach him failed, sparking panic and worry throughout the community.
Hours later, the priest was found abandoned in a forest area several kilometers from where he was taken.
Good Samaritans who discovered him said he appeared weak, injured, and barely conscious.
They immediately informed authorities and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed he was in critical condition and receiving emergency treatment.
Church sources say the priest had recently made public statements during his sermons criticizing government policies, especially those linked to corruption and human rights violations.
He reportedly urged leaders to act with fairness and transparency.
His words, however, are believed to have angered powerful figures within the system.
The Catholic Church in Tanzania has condemned the attack, calling it an inhumane act meant to instill fear among clergy and citizens.
In a strong statement, church leaders demanded justice and protection for all religious figures, stressing that the church will not be silenced by intimidation.
