Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga faces a political crossroads as speculation mounts over whether he will back President William Ruto in the 2027 general election—a move that could reshape his legacy and fracture his support base.
Odinga, long seen as the face of Kenya’s opposition and a champion for political reform, has seen his popularity wane since entering into a working relationship with Ruto’s government.
Analysts say the alliance has unsettled his traditional strongholds in Western, Nyanza, and the coastal regions, where many supporters feel betrayed.
“Raila was the face and voice of struggle and hope for the downtrodden. But now, by joining forces with Ruto, he has confused many who saw him as a reformist fighter,” political analyst Beatrice Kimani said.
Although Odinga maintains that his cooperation with Ruto will last only until 2027, rumours persist that he could endorse the president’s re-election bid.
Such a move would mark a dramatic shift for a man who built his career opposing the very system he is now seen to be working with.
“Raila’s biggest task is not just to save Ruto but also to salvage his own political legacy,” Dr. Kimani said.
