Mother Suspected Daughter of Killing Her Father — Seven Years Later, the Mother Is Bludgeoned to Death and the Daughter Is Behind Bars

A quiet neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was shocked earlier this month when 64-year-old Carrie Zettel was found dead in her backyard.

Police say she was killed in a brutal attack, and the main suspect is her own daughter, 29-year-old Lauren Spors.

The case has drawn national attention because it involves years of family conflict, past accusations, and concerns about mental health and domestic violence.

What Happened

On October 12, police were called to Carrie’s home. When officers arrived, they found her lying in the backyard with severe injuries.

According to a search warrant reported by local news, her wounds were so serious that parts of her head were badly damaged.

Police soon arrested her daughter, Lauren, and charged her with first-degree intentional homicide with a domestic violence modifier.

Court documents show that Lauren is being held in jail and is expected to face trial. As of now, no plea has been entered, and her lawyer has not made a public comment about the case.

A Family with a Troubled Past

Friends and neighbors said this tragedy did not come out of nowhere. Carrie’s close friend, Loretta Moyer, told reporters that there had been problems between Carrie and her daughter for many years.

In 2018, Carrie had even filed a restraining order against Lauren because she believed her daughter was violent and unsafe to be around.

That same year, Carrie claimed that Lauren might have been involved in the death of her father, Jeffrey Spors.

In court papers filed during the restraining order, Carrie said Lauren had attacked Jeffrey by hitting him on the head with heavy bottles and had once threatened someone with a knife.

Lauren later wrote to the court saying, “My mom says I killed him, but I don’t remember doing it.”

However, Jeffrey’s death was officially ruled an accident. The medical examiner said he died from complications related to overmedication, and no charges were brought against Lauren at the time.

Previous Criminal Issues

In 2020, Lauren was charged with misdemeanor battery and theft. But the case did not go to trial because she was found mentally unfit to stand trial.

This raised more questions about her mental health, her treatment, and whether she received proper help or support.

Neighbors say Carrie still tried to help her daughter, even when she was afraid. They said Carrie often spoke about the challenges of dealing with someone who might be mentally unstable but was still part of her family.

A candlelight vigil was held in Carrie’s honor after her death. Friends, family, neighbors, and even local children came to remember her.

People described her as a kind woman who helped others, especially people dealing with mental health problems.

She was known in the community as “Grandma Carrie” because she always looked after children in the neighborhood and shared her homemade desserts, especially a special cheesecake-like dish that many loved.

Her son spoke at the vigil and said his mother was a bright, loving person who never gave up on others, even when life was hard. He asked people to remember her for her kindness and not only for the way she died.

Lauren has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide, one of the most serious crimes in Wisconsin. If she is found guilty, she could spend the rest of her life in prison.

The case may also involve questions about her mental health and whether she fully understood her actions. The court will decide if she is mentally fit to stand trial.

This case has also brought attention to bigger issues, such as how families struggle when a loved one may have a mental illness, and how hard it is to ask for help.

Many people wonder whether more support or intervention could have prevented this tragedy.

Carrie tried to protect herself in 2018 by asking for a restraining order. She also tried to get help for her daughter.

But at the same time, she loved her child and hoped things would get better eventually. Sadly, those hopes ended in tragedy.
