The long serving politician and veteran soldier a close Museveni ally for decades is being lined up for another term in public office a development that has reawakened controversy regarding generational leadership loyalty and succession in the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
General Ali who has held several key positions in government since the 1980s including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs is widely respected for his long service and unwavering support for the president.
Museveni’s public endorsement during a recent event in Adjani was both symbolic and strategic signaling continued confidence in one of his most trusted comrades from the bush war era.
However critics have questioned whether the endorsement represents progress or stagnation. Many Ugandans, particularly the youth have expressed frustration over what they perceive as a lack of opportunities for new and younger leaders within the NRM.
Some opposition figures argue that Museveni’s decision reflects a broader pattern of recycling aging political elites rather than grooming fresh leadership for the country’s future.
Their allies however appreciate General Ali for being disciplined humble and politically and security-wise knowledgeable about Uganda. They believe his experience remains valuable in a country still grappling with complex regional and governance challenges.
As Uganda speeds towards the next general election the blessing will determine political alignments and succession contests within the ruling party.
Whether it consolidates NRM's unity or stokes further debates about the demand for a generational handover remains to be seen but this is sure: General Moses Ali has still to inspire loyalty and controversy in equal proportions.
