President William Ruto has congratulated Hakainde Hichilema after he secured a second term as Zambia’s president, praising the election victory as a reflection of the confidence placed in him by Zambian voters.

In a message issued following the August 13, 2026, presidential election, Ruto conveyed congratulations on behalf of the Kenyan Government and people, while wishing Hichilema success as he begins another five-year term.

Ruto described Hichilema’s victory as “resounding and decisive”, saying it demonstrated the Zambian leader’s commitment to advancing the country’s development and improving the welfare of its citizens.

According to Ruto, the result was also an affirmation of the trust Zambians had placed in Hichilema’s leadership and his vision for the country’s future.

The Kenyan President used the opportunity to emphasise the longstanding relationship between Nairobi and Lusaka, describing Zambia as both a brotherly country and an important regional partner.

“Kenya regards Zambia not only as a brotherly nation, but also as a valuable partner and ally in the region,” Ruto said.

He noted that the two countries have maintained cooperation over the years through bilateral engagements as well as within regional and international institutions.

Ruto said Kenya was ready to strengthen that relationship during Hichilema’s second term, particularly by expanding areas of cooperation between the two governments.

“I look forward to continuing to work closely with you to further solidify and broaden the bonds of friendship and cooperation between our two nations,” he said.

Hichilema’s victory extends his presidency beyond the first term he secured in 2021. His re-election comes as Zambia continues to implement economic reforms and seek stronger growth following a difficult period marked by debt challenges and economic pressures.

The second term is expected to place renewed focus on economic recovery, investment, job creation and improving living standards for Zambians.

For Kenya, continued engagement with Lusaka presents an opportunity to deepen economic and diplomatic ties with Zambia while strengthening cooperation on regional and continental matters.

Ruto also wished Hichilema “every success” in his second term and expressed hope that Zambia would continue to enjoy peace, unity and prosperity.

The Kenyan President concluded his message by assuring Hichilema of Kenya’s commitment to maintaining the longstanding friendship between the two countries.
