Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has said Kenya has made significant progress in democratic governance since the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution, citing devolution, protection of rights and stronger institutions among the key gains.
Omollo made the remarks during the 2026 Katiba Day celebrations held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, where President William Ruto presided over events marking 16 years since the Constitution came into force.
The PS said the 2010 Constitution had continued to shape Kenya’s democratic journey by bringing governance closer to citizens through devolution and creating greater opportunities for public participation.
According to Omollo, the constitutional framework has also strengthened the protection of individual rights while providing a foundation for institutions tasked with promoting accountability and good governance.
“Sixteen years on, the 2010 Constitution continues to shape our democratic journey, with gains in devolution, protection of rights, public participation and stronger institutions bringing governance closer to the people,” Omollo said.
He said the country must now build on the progress achieved as Kenya looks beyond Vision 2030, arguing that the Constitution remains central to efforts to create a more just, secure, inclusive and prosperous society.
Omollo called on government and citizens to uphold the values and principles contained in the Constitution, particularly those relating to national unity, inclusion and good governance.
He said the responsibility of implementing the constitutional order extends beyond government institutions, stressing the need for all Kenyans to play their part in ensuring the benefits of the 2010 Constitution are realised.
“As we look Beyond Vision 2030, the Constitution provides the foundation for a more just, secure, inclusive and prosperous Kenya,” he said.
The 2026 Katiba Day celebrations provided an opportunity for national leaders and citizens to reflect on the country’s constitutional journey while assessing progress made and challenges that remain.
Omollo said the government would continue working to strengthen national unity and ensure every Kenyan can fully benefit from the rights, opportunities and protections provided under the constitutional order.
