Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused the government of failing to honour its commitment to channel a share of Amboseli National Park revenues to Kajiado County, calling for the immediate release of funds owed to the county.
Kalonzo said the Maa community, which has historically lived alongside and protected the Amboseli ecosystem, continues to face inadequate access to basic services despite the park generating billions of shillings in revenue.
In a statement, the former Vice President said the community had remained firmly aligned with the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition but had yet to receive a fair share of the economic benefits generated from resources within its traditional homeland.
He singled out the agreement on the management and revenue sharing of Amboseli National Park, saying the arrangement promised substantial financial benefits for Kajiado.
According to Kalonzo, the agreement provided for Kajiado County to receive 50 per cent of the park's net revenue from July 2026, with the share expected to rise to 70 per cent before eventually paving the way for full county control of the park.
He claimed that despite the agreement being gazetted, the government had not remitted approximately KSh3 billion in revenue generated by Amboseli during the 2025/26 financial year.
“The Maa community does not need another promise. It needs what was already signed and gazetted,” Kalonzo said.
The Wiper leader questioned why residents living around a major tourism destination continued to experience challenges such as inadequate water supply, poor roads and limited healthcare.
He argued that a greater share of revenue generated from Amboseli should be invested in improving infrastructure and public services for communities living around the park.
Kalonzo's remarks come amid wider discussions over the sharing of revenues generated from national resources and the role of local communities in conservation.
The management of Amboseli has remained a sensitive issue in Kajiado, where local leaders and residents have previously called for greater involvement in decisions concerning the park and a larger share of its economic benefits.
Kalonzo urged the national government to implement the gazetted agreement, insisting that revenue generated from Amboseli should directly benefit Kajiado residents.
“Amboseli must benefit Kajiado. The agreement must be honoured. The money must be released,” he said.
