Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made explosive claims that a planned assassination targeting him and two senior opposition figures was orchestrated during a political rally in Kikuyu.
Speaking on Wednesday at his Wamunyoro residence while hosting elders from Murang’a County, Gachagua alleged that police officers were hired to eliminate him, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
“We were attacked with Kalonzo and Matiang’i, and these two police officers from Kikuyu Police Station were the ones paid to kill us,” he claimed.
Gachagua did not provide evidence but insisted the plot was well-coordinated and nearly executed during the rally, raising fresh questions about security at political events.
He further linked the same officers to recent killings, including those of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu and Dr. Victoria Mutiso, which he claimed were tied to land disputes.
According to him, attempts to have the officers investigated have repeatedly failed, despite concerns raised by multiple parties.
The DCP leader also accused Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin of shielding the officers, alleging that efforts to pursue accountability have been blocked at senior levels.
“In Kikuyu Police Station is where they killed that lawyer and killed this doctor,” he said.
The allegations are likely to spark political and public debate, especially amid ongoing concerns over police conduct and extrajudicial killings in the country.
There was no immediate response from the National Police Service or the Directorate of Criminal Investigations at the time of publication.
Gachagua’s claims now cast fresh focus on the Kikuyu rally, which he describes as a narrowly averted assassination attempt involving senior opposition leaders—an assertion that could deepen political tensions as the country edges closer to the next election cycle.
