A tragic incident has shaken Kituli village in Bungoma County after a one-and-a-half-year-old boy drowned in a family borehole.
The young child had been reported missing by his parents earlier in the evening before he was discovered inside the uncovered borehole located within a neighbour’s compound.
According to Western Region Police Commander Issa Mohamud, it is still unclear how the boy wandered away from home without being noticed.
He explained that the family alerted authorities when they could not find the child, and the search led them to the open borehole, where the boy had already drowned.
Police retrieved the body and took it to the mortuary pending an autopsy to help give the family more answers.
The child’s parents told police that he had been playing outside their home as usual. They assumed he was still within the compound until they noticed he was missing.
“We do not know how the boy found his way to the neighbour’s borehole,” Mohamud said, adding that investigations are ongoing to establish whether any negligence contributed to the accident.
While the village was still mourning the young boy, Bungoma County faced another painful event.
In Sacho village, Kapsokwony, an 80-year-old woman was found dead inside her house on Wednesday afternoon.
A neighbour who had not seen her for most of the day decided to check on her, only to discover her lifeless body.
Police visited the scene and moved the body to the mortuary as they began investigations to determine the cause of death.
Residents said the elderly woman lived alone, and many are now calling for better community support for elderly people living without close family members.
In Kisumu County, police have launched investigations into the death of a scrap metal dealer whose body was found already decomposing on a backstreet in Holo Market.
The man was identified as Rogers Shishiali, who worked at a local scrap metal yard.
Detectives said they are yet to establish the motive behind the killing, but early reports suggest he may have been murdered elsewhere before the body was dumped in the area.
The body was moved to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination to help determine what happened.
Meanwhile, in Bomet County, police arrested a suspect linked to the July 23, 2025 death of a man identified as Cyrus Kiplangat.
The incident occurred during an altercation that turned violent. The suspect, who had been under investigation for several months, was expected to be taken to court as police sought more time to gather crucial evidence.
Residents expressed relief, saying they hoped justice would finally be served for the family of Kiplangat.
In Kilifi County, another case is under police investigation after a man identified as Rashid Fodo, 43, died at Kilifi Hospital.
He had been admitted earlier after sustaining serious injuries during an altercation at a palm den in Gede, Watamu on October 16.
Police said they are treating the case as a suspected murder and are pursuing additional suspects who may have participated in the attack.
Fodo’s body was moved to the mortuary for an autopsy while detectives continue their probe.
Across the affected counties, residents have urged authorities to speed up investigations and ensure all responsible individuals face justice.
Families involved in these incidents are now waiting for autopsy reports, hoping they will provide clarity and closure.
Police have called on the public to cooperate with investigators and to continue reporting suspicious activities in their communities.
