Lawyer Miguna Miguna has apologised to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after sharing a fake report about a supposed power-sharing deal with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Miguna, who is based in Canada, admitted that he acted hastily and unfairly criticised Gachagua.
Earlier this week, some media reports claimed that Gachagua was planning to step down from the 2027 presidential race to support Kalonzo Musyoka.
According to these reports, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya would then become Kalonzo's running mate.
Reacting to the story, Miguna criticised Gachagua, calling him selfish and accusing him of putting personal interests above the nation.
Miguna’s comments drew attention because of their strong language and the timing, as the opposition was expected to present a united front against President William Ruto.
However, Miguna later realised that the reports were false. He issued a public apology to Gachagua, saying he had shared “what appears to be a fake screenshot” of the supposed power-sharing statement.
He stressed that while he disagrees with Gachagua’s political approach, he does not support the spread of false information.
“This is to sincerely apologise to Rigathi Gachagua for sharing what appears to be a fake screenshot of what he purportedly said about a 50/50 power-sharing arrangement with Kalonzo Musyoka,” Miguna said.
“As a man committed to transforming Kenya, I do not subscribe to lies, propaganda, or empty political rhetoric.”
Miguna also accused certain actors, whom he claims are backed by the state, of spreading fake news to divide the opposition and confuse the public.
He described the misinformation as part of a campaign by “tyrant William Ruto's propaganda machine” to create unnecessary conflict.
Meanwhile, Rigathi Gachagua dismissed the reports about stepping down. Speaking to the DCP Youth League in Nairobi, Gachagua said the rumours were designed to demoralise his supporters.
He affirmed his intention to run for president in 2027, citing his grassroots support and strategic planning as strengths that make him a strong contender against Ruto.
Gachagua also highlighted that the opposition plans to field a single candidate and said he is committed to rallying leaders behind whoever emerges as the strongest candidate.
He called on the media and the public to ignore false claims and focus on facts.
