Gor Mahia fans, popularly known as the Green Army, have made it clear that Raila Odinga will forever remain their patron, even after his death.
The passionate supporters say no one else can take his place, calling him the heart and spirit of the club.
The fans, dressed in their iconic green jerseys, gathered at the Kisumu Sports Ground before traveling to Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, to pay their respects at Raila’s graveside.
They sang, danced, and chanted his name, describing him as the soul of Gor Mahia and a man who stood by them through thick and thin.
“Raila is our patron — dead or alive!” shouted one fan as others echoed in agreement.
“Anybody else can be deputy, but not patron.
That title belongs to Baba forever,” added another.
Their chants, filled with emotion and pride, showed just how deeply connected the club is to Raila’s legacy.
For decades, Raila Odinga was more than just a political figure to Gor Mahia supporters. He was a symbol of unity, resilience, and hope.
Many fans remember how he attended Gor Mahia matches, cheered alongside them, and even supported the club during difficult times.
To them, Raila’s love for the team went beyond politics — it was personal.
In Siaya, hundreds of supporters arrived in buses and motorbikes, turning the quiet roads into a sea of green.
They carried banners reading “Baba, our patron forever” and “Awuoro Juogi!” — a Luo phrase meaning “we are amazed by the spirits.”
The atmosphere was filled with emotion as they marched toward his final resting place, singing club anthems and freedom songs.
Leaders from both political divides praised the fans for showing loyalty not only to the club but also to a man who fought for democracy and equality in Kenya.
“Raila Odinga was a father figure to many, and Gor Mahia fans have shown that his influence will live on,” said a local leader from Kisumu.
Some supporters explained that their decision to honour Raila as patron forever is about respect, not politics.
“We are not talking about parties here,” said a fan from Nairobi.
“We are talking about love, leadership, and loyalty. Raila gave Gor Mahia his heart, and we will never forget that.”
Others called on the club’s management to officially preserve Raila’s title in the club’s constitution as a mark of gratitude.
They argued that any future leaders can serve as deputies, but the patron position should remain permanently associated with Raila Odinga’s name.
As the fans laid flowers and offered prayers at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, tears flowed freely. Many spoke of his legacy as a man who never gave up, even when the odds were against him.
“He taught us to believe in ourselves,” said one supporter.
“That is what Gor Mahia is all about — belief, strength, and spirit.”
The fans later returned to Kisumu singing “Baba ni wetu, patron wetu milele,” meaning “Baba is ours, our patron forever.”
For Gor Mahia supporters, Raila Odinga will always be more than a name — he will remain their eternal patron, the spirit that continues to guide the Green Army.
