Analyst Claims Uhuru Is Quietly Sidelining Matiang’i to Support Kalonzo for Presidency

A new political debate has started in Kenya after a well-known analyst claimed that former president Uhuru Kenyatta may not fully support Fred Matiang’i for the 2027 presidential race.

The claims come only days after Uhuru publicly endorsed Matiang’i through the Jubilee Party, calling him a capable and hardworking leader.

Even with that public support, the analyst believes that another plan might be taking shape behind the scenes.

According to a report by the People Daily on Thursday, political analyst Herman Manyora alleged that Uhuru may be quietly shifting his support to former vice-president Kalonzo Musyoka.

Manyora suggested that Uhuru sees Kalonzo as a stronger and more acceptable candidate who can unite different political groups and challenge President William Ruto in the next election.

Manyora stated that the political climate is changing quickly and that several leaders who were once on different sides are now working together.

He argued that Uhuru might be part of a larger political strategy that includes Rigathi Gachagua and Fred Matiang’i.

According to him, the three leaders appear to agree on one thing: that Kalonzo Musyoka could be the best option to face President Ruto in 2027.

Gachagua also recently described Kalonzo as the ideal opposition leader who can stand firm against the president.

His remarks raised questions about whether other prominent leaders were beginning to rally behind Kalonzo as well.

Manyora believes that these statements signal a wider alignment forming in the background.

The analyst’s comments created mixed reactions across the political space. Some people asked why Uhuru would endorse Matiang’i publicly yet support Kalonzo privately.

Manyora explained that politics is complex and leaders often make public statements that do not always match the moves they make privately.

He added that Uhuru might have endorsed Matiang’i to strengthen the Jubilee Party and maintain unity within the party, but still consider Kalonzo the more realistic presidential candidate.

Manyora also stated that a joint force involving Uhuru, Gachagua, Matiang’i, and Kalonzo would be a major challenge to President Ruto.

According to him, such a combination would bring together different communities, different political experiences, and different voting blocs.

He described Kalonzo as a steady and experienced leader who has been in politics for many years and understands national leadership.

On the other hand, supporters of Matiang’i remain confident that he is still Uhuru’s preferred candidate.

They argue that the former president has repeatedly praised Matiang’i for his strong work ethic and ability to handle national duties.

They believe Uhuru would not change his mind after making such a clear endorsement. Some of them think that Manyora’s comments may only be personal opinions rather than evidence of any real political plan.

Kalonzo’s supporters welcomed the analyst’s remarks, saying that Kenya needs a stable and dependable president who can calm political tensions. They believe Kalonzo represents peace, negotiation, and unity.

Some also argued that if leaders like Uhuru, Gachagua, and Matiang’i truly support Kalonzo, it would increase his national strength and give him a better chance in the race.

For now, all three leaders — Uhuru Kenyatta, Fred Matiang’i, and Rigathi Gachagua — have not responded directly to Manyora’s claims. None of them has publicly declared a united plan in support of Kalonzo.

As a result, the alleged political alignment remains a subject of rumours, analysis, and speculation.

What is clear is that the 2027 presidential race is already gaining energy. Different political camps are reorganizing, and several alliances are being tested.

Political analysts say that Kenya often experiences early political realignments ahead of a major election.

They expect more statements, more meetings, and more alliances to form in the coming months. According to them, nothing is final until the official campaigns begin.
