Will Gachagua Attend? Questions As Opposition Leaders Prepare to Grace Raila's State Funeral

As Kenyans unite to pay their last respects to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, leaders of the United Opposition have confirmed that they will join mourners at Nyayo Stadium.

DAP-K Party Leader Eugene Wamalwa is the latest to confirm his attendance at Raila’s State Funeral.

He recalled how Raila personally attended his father Michael Kijana Wamalwa’s burial in Kitale and even donated bulls for the ceremony.

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka is also expected at the event. On Thursday, October 16, 2025, Kalonzo announced that he had cut short his 10-day visit to the United Kingdom to return home and mourn Raila.

Kalonzo, who was Raila’s long-time ally and twice served as his running mate, said he received news of Raila’s passing while abroad and immediately began his journey back.

Democratic Change Party (DCP) Leader Rigathi Gachagua is yet to confirm whether he will join other Opposition leaders at Nyayo.

At Nyayo Stadium, the President, Deputy President, and several foreign dignitaries will join the Odinga family for an Anglican service and tributes starting at 9:35 a.m. The President is expected to deliver an address before inviting global leaders to pay their respects.

In the afternoon, Raila’s body will be moved to his Karen residence ahead of the final burial in Bondo on October 19.
