Tension filled the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Thursday morning as police used teargas to disperse mourners during preparations for the public viewing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s body.
The incident drew sharp criticism from Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi, who accused the government of mishandling a sensitive national event.
Amisi expressed anger over the police response, saying it was wrong to use force against citizens who had gathered peacefully to mourn a national hero.
His remarks came after chaotic scenes were reported at the stadium, where thousands of supporters had arrived early to pay their final respects.
Many were caught off guard when police moved in to control the growing crowd.
The confusion began when a section of the crowd blocked vehicles carrying the public address system into the stadium.
Attempts by security officers to clear the way turned violent after some individuals started throwing stones. The situation quickly escalated, forcing police to fire teargas to disperse the mourners.
The confrontation caused panic and temporarily disrupted final preparations at the venue. Some mourners fled in confusion while others struggled to regain order. Organizers later resumed setting up the facility once calm was restored.
The government had shifted the viewing from Parliament Buildings to Kasarani to handle the massive number of people expected to attend. Officials said the stadium offered better space and security to accommodate the crowds.
