Senator Samson Cherargei has sharply criticized Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka for expressing frustration over being denied the opportunity to eulogize former Prime Minister Raila Odinga during his state funeral.
In a Facebook post, Cherargei stated, "Kalonzo should be the last to complain that he was denied a chance to eulogize Jakom Raila yesterday at the state funeral." He further emphasized that Kalonzo's actions and statements over the years have demonstrated a lack of genuine support for Raila's legacy.
The controversy arose when Kalonzo, a prominent opposition figure, publicly lamented the absence of opposition representation during the funeral service.
He noted that even Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki's acknowledgment of opposition leaders was barely audible, suggesting a deliberate attempt to sideline them. Kalonzo argued that such exclusion was contrary to what Raila would have desired, given his advocacy for democracy and inclusivity.
However, Cherargei contends that Kalonzo's criticism is misplaced. He points to Kalonzo's previous rejection of an invitation to attend ODM's founder members' celebration in September 2025 as evidence of his inconsistent support for Raila's initiatives. Cherargei implies that Kalonzo's actions have often been self-serving rather than in solidarity with Raila's vision.
The exchange highlights ongoing tensions within Kenya's political landscape, particularly between opposition leaders and their roles in national events. While Kalonzo seeks recognition for the opposition's contributions, Cherargei's remarks suggest that such acknowledgment should be earned through consistent and genuine support for the late Raila Odinga's legacy.
