Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused KANU chairman Gideon Moi of engaging in a political scheme that threatens to destabilize the Mt Kenya region.
He claimed that Moi’s new alliance with President William Ruto is not about national unity but a covert plan to consolidate power in the Rift Valley while weakening other regions.
Speaking during a rally in Embu County, Gachagua warned that Gideon Moi is playing a dangerous game that could reignite regional mistrust and political tension.
He said the move to unite KANU with Ruto’s UDA and Raila Odinga’s ODM parties is driven by selfish interests rather than genuine inclusivity.
Gachagua alleged that while Ruto strengthens his support base in the Rift Valley through Moi, he has dispatched Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to Mt Kenya to create divisions. He accused the president of financing leaders from the region to sabotage his influence and unity efforts among local leaders.
He further expressed concern that Mt Kenya is being deliberately targeted to weaken its political bargaining power ahead of the 2027 elections. Gachagua warned local leaders against falling into what he described as a state-sponsored trap designed to fragment their unity.
According to Gachagua, the Ruto–Moi alliance represents hypocrisy at the highest level. He argued that the same leaders who condemn others for regional mobilization are now celebrating ethnic unity when it benefits them politically.
The reconciliation between Ruto and Moi took place at Kabarak, Nakuru County, where both pledged to cooperate under the Kenya Kwanza coalition. Ruto defended the move as part of a broader national agenda, but Gachagua dismissed it as a calculated betrayal of Mt Kenya.
The escalating rivalry has widened the political fault lines within the ruling coalition. Observers warn that the tension could trigger a realignment of forces, with Gachagua positioning himself as the defender of the mountain’s political interests.
